On Friday 1 January 2021 from 2000 to 2145 GMT, I am planning a Big Sing for Peace. Everyone and anyone is invited to join me in this virtual space on Zoom. We will sing for joy, not judgement, setting an intention of holding peace in our hearts and sending peace into the world.
This event is free and open to all, wherever you are in the world. However, I will be asking for donations to go towards 3 charities. These are Plum Village UK (PVUK) – created by spiritual leader and peace activist Thich Nhat Hanh. PVUK promotes Plum Village mindfulness in the UK. The Haven + London – a unique community where the creators, thinkers and change-makers of our world can find balance, peace and inner strength to be the best that they can be. Finally, Love is Kindness which aims to create a world that works for everyone. They support global projects for women, children, health, education and the environment.
An invite is extended to you wherever you are in the world. The event, which will start at 2000 GMT, will be held on Zoom. You will need to register to join. Registration will be open soon however you can email your interest to sing4sane @ gmail.com. Details will then be sent to you when the registration page is open.
This event is part of my SING4SANE project. You can learn about this by watching the SING4SANE promo video here. And you can hear the SING4SANE music video of Live Again here on YouTube.
I was super pleased to get the opportunity to talk on the evening news of London Live TV about the forthcoming SING4SANE Big Sing project again alongside SANE charity Founder and CEO, Marjorie Wallace.
Following-on from the S4S Big Sing event that took place in February this year to raise awareness of mental health matters and fundraise for the charity SANE, I have recently decided to organise yet another event but this time, it will take place this summer in a London recording studio with the record being released as a charity single and all proceeds from sales going direct to SANE.
I’m asking those who are interested in joining me in a renowned recording studio to sing and record my song, Live Again – whether they be singers or not – to get in touch. Have a watch of the short interview to get a bit more info. More details on the project will be released over the coming weeks.
I had the pleasure of being interviewed by Dutch writer, Ed Muitjen’s for the Johnny’s Garden webzine and a few weeks ago the interview – written in Dutch and translated by Ed into English – went live online. It was a delight answering Ed’s questions which encouraged me to give deep insight into the making of the album. The interview’s a good read too.
For the English version, visit here and the Dutch version can be found here.
I was stunned to discover that US radio station, JazzVnU.com has been giving lots of love and airplay to Day Dawns after I got in touch with them to introduce myself.
I Need You Here, in particular, has been playing on their airwaves and they’ve very kindly added details of the album to their “New & Upcoming Artists” page.
…and it’s great that they do. Last week online magazine, FATEA published a glowing report on Day Dawns written by Neil King.

UKM: Say a little about yourself.
MJ: I’m a singer/songwriter. I’ve always sung – for as long as I can remember but song writing is a more recent thing although I’d always loved writing. When I was growing up I loved writing stories and poems which I’d put into cards and, later on, I began to write the occasional song. But it was really only something I thought of now and again but never really did.
Singer-songwriter Melissa James will be releasing her debut album later this month.
Day Dawns was three years in the making, and the craft and love put into its tracks is immediately apparent, with each one a heartfelt melange of jazz, soul, blues and folk (although often not at the same time…) crowned by James’ gorgeous, velvety voice.
Not quite convinced? Then have a listen to ‘I Need You Here’, a paean to a lost relationship, via James’ website right here.
Day Dawns is out via Slickersounds on June 25, and James will also be playing a special show to launch the album at London’s Green Note on June 21 – tickets are currently on sale.
